Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning is the treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is simply inflammation of the gums, whereas periodontitis is a serious gum infection that destroys the soft tissue and the bone supporting the teeth and, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.

The symptoms of periodontitis are

• swollen gums
• bright red or purplish gums that bleed, especially in non-smokers
• new gaps between the teeth and gums
• bad breath
• a bad taste in the mouth

The risk factors for developing periodontitis are

• gingivitis
• heredity
• poor oral hygiene
• smoking
• diabetes
• age
• poorly fitted dental restorations

The dentist always gives tailored oral hygiene instructions, suited to each patient's ability to follow them.
